Communist Square
Location Library Hungary
In the heart of a former Hungarian Soviet-era industrial city, this imposing square evokes an intimidating yet awe-inspiring atmosphere with its towering buildings, constructed in the 1980s to host a local museum. The windowless facades, with their geometric patterns, suggest an authoritarian state’s secretive power. The unified faded yellow colour of the square provides a perfect location for film and photography projects that are set in an utopian future or the past, for example in a country of the former Communist Bloc. The wider surroundings of the filming location is also authentic because it consists of large concrete housing blocks, thus providing an entirely historically accurate backdrop that could also easily double as such as present day North Korea.
